At the 2004 Breeders' Cup races at Lone Star Park, Todd Pletcher had the kind of day most trainers only dream about. He won the Breeders' Cup Distaff-G1 with ASHADO and the Breeders' Cup Sprint-G1 with SPEIGHTSTOWN, creating two 2004 champions at the same time. Though he has had such stellar horses as DOLLAR BILL and BALTO STAR in his stable, Pletcher had previously been shut out on Breeders' Cup day, but clearly he made up for lost time. Pletcher earned the 2004 Eclipse Award for outstanding trainer.
In 2005 Pletcher met and surpassed his own superlative standards, amassing the highest one-year earnings figure ever for a trainer ($20,867,842), and once again capturing Eclipse honors. One of his top horses, FLOWER ALLY, winner at three of the Lanes End S.-G2, Jim Dandy S.-G2 and Travers S.-G1, was Eclipse runner-up for champion 3-year-old male of 2005; retired ASHADO repeated as champion, named top elder mare of 2005.
The Texas-born Pletcher, known for his unassuming and unemotional manner, was witnessed to be cracking smiles and enjoying his success. The one-time assistant trainer to D. Wayne Lukas had placed himself in the Thoroughbred history books in a big way.
